Silver Follies

Today we tried to fill a cartridge with silver nitrate solution. Almost immediately after we added the solution to the cartridge (through the 0.2 um syringe filter), a dark gray precipitate formed. After the clogged print head issues we (and other groups) have experienced, I can only imagine the havoc any precipitate would wreak on a printer. In related news, we have ditched silver and become really big fans of iron. Just giving a heads up. |

Silver precipitate
I have had the same problem with Bismuth nitrate. I made it more acidic and it fixed the precipitate, but now the printhead of the cartridge the bismuth was in is clogged.

We had a similar problem with Bismuth. We found that it decomposes in the solution, and the result forms a precipitate. To avoid this problem, it would have to be dissolved in a concentrated strong acid.
