Supply list in kits
Submitted by mgeselbr on Tue, 06/17/2008 - 23:08
I would recommend adding in a Parts List or Supply List with the kits that itemizes what is included. I don't recall seeing that. I feel lucky in that I had seen most of the components before and so knew what I was getting and could figure out more or less what each piece was for. I'm not so sure it was that obvious to someone who was brand new to the project. What was the experience of other folks? |

Help indentifying parts
OK... let me preface this by saying that they last time I did anything with Legos was about 20 years ago. So I have this kit and all these extra parts... otherwise known hundreds of lego parts on my desk. The building manual, the "packing list", and info on the Lego website don't seem to match up. For example, the packing list says "Axels (all) - 11". However, I have over 40 axels all of different sizes. The building manual calls for using 6 (unless I counted wrong). How do I know which ones to use? "Axel, length 5" is not listed on the Lego website, nor does 5 seem to indicate a metric length (I checked - I've got 5.4 cm and 4.6 cm lengths).
Also, "long pin"/"short pin"??? I have 7 piles of different pieces that could all be "pins", but the Lego site doesn't list "pins"... it does list a bunch of different kinds of cross axels (none of which correspond to the above, by the way), different kinds of connector pegs.
HELP! lol :)

~ A couple of things here- the list I gave you is not truly a packing list, it is a part of a spreadsheet created to determine costs, and as such I'm not surprised that it's confusing. "Axles (all) - 11" refers to the total number of axles you will need regardless of size. It is also wrong- you should need ten, five for each gearbox. All of the axles you need should be included in your NXT kit.

~ All lengths refered to in the manual are in Lego units, not inches or cm. By this I mean that length 5 will be the same length as a normal lego brick with five connector knobs on top.
Also, "long pin"/"short pin"??? I have 7 piles of different pieces that could all be "pins", but the Lego site doesn't list "pins"... it does list a bunch of different kinds of cross axels (none of which correspond to the above, by the way), different kinds of connector pegs.
~ My best advice here is to ignore the Lego site and try to match parts that you have with the pictures in the manual, and completely ignore color. The "pins" are the connecting parts that snap into the round holes in technic bricks and beams. Long pins are three Lego units long, short pins are two units long. Both are black in actuality. I call them pins because that is how they are listed in both the 3D rendering program and the website where we order parts.
axel length 8
I'm on gear box step 5 which calls for 1-axel length 8 for each gear box and I don't have any more of that size... I do have length 7s and length 10s... how important is it that it be length 8?
axle length
It makes no difference.
Axel length
I found the scale drawings on the back cover of the book that comes with the mindstorm very helpful in determinig axel length. Of course the most helpful was having a 12 year old Lego master builder in the family (he never needed to look at scale drawings)

Excellent. That helps... thanks!

Agreed! I think one of my first thoughts while looking through the big box full of exciting new things was, "Now, what exactly am I supposed to have in here?" Eventually we have figured out what everything is, and it seems like we have everything we need.

Sorry about that, everyone!
Sorry about that, everyone! We'll remember to include a packing list in the future. Would any of you like me to post one now?
