use of NH4NO3?

NH4NO3 was said to be used with making the metal-nitrate solutions, but Billy and I did not use NH4NO3 in our solutions. We were wondering what the exact purpose of NH4NO3 is.

So, if we are using an HP

So, if we are using an HP inkjet printer we make the solutions with ammonium nitrate instead of DI water?

solutions

In whatever amount you decide to make your solution – say 100 mL – in that solution you should have 0.35 M of your metal nitrate, 0.6 M ammonium nitrate, and then add 0.015 M HNO3 (which is like a drop) with the solvent being water. So you would calculate the grams needed for each and then put them in the flask and dilute with DI water. Is that helpful?

That was very helpful. Thank

Ammonium Nitrate

The ammonium nitrate is used only in thermal ink jet printing where a resistor is used to produce gas (water vapor mostly) from the liquid ink which expands to force out the liquid ahead of it. the ammonium nitrate is an explosive (think the oklahoma city bomb) that increases the gas produced during the rapid thermal heating and makes the ink jetting more efficient. So if you are using a piezo ink jet printer or the pipetting method you don't need to add it.

the ammonium

The ammonium nitrate is actually used just in the inkjet printing, which was a suggestion by HP to mimic the normal ink used in the printer. So when we pipette we don't need to worry about it.

Oh, okay. Well, thank you for
